Tours

The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum uses its collection of more than 200 sculptures, paintings, and drawings by 20th century American sculptor Charles Umlauf, to provide educational programs and experiences that encourage the understanding and appreciation of sculpture. This collection, with its wide range of materials, styles, and themes, is an excellent teaching tool.

School Tours 

Tours @ the UMLAUF

The UMLAUF provides tours to private and independent schools including the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Texas School for the Deaf, special needs students, Communities in Schools (CIS) programs, and other community organizations associated with children’s education and students with special needs. Students tour the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum can learn the visual and verbal language of sculpture and visual arts.

Docent lead tours are available Tuesday-Friday, 10 am - 4pm. Tours are approximately one hour and recommended for students in first grade and above. Tours include the largest touchable bronze collection in Texas, a guide to lead the tour, special exhibitions held in our gallery, and a Sculpture Safari. The UMLAUF provides free tours and admission to all public school groups.

The UMLAUF also provides tours to non-school groups including UT Roads Scholars, UT Lamp, Optimistic Garden Club, Chinese Association of Houston, Charity League of Austin, and the Railroad Society.

Special needs 

Touch tours @ the UMLAUF

The UMLAUF has the largest accessible sculpture collection in Texas and offers touch tours for the blind and visually impaired. The outdoor collection has been washed and waxed for tours with the visually impaired and other kinesthetic learners, allowing guests to touch the artworks.

The UMLAUF orientation video, featuring Charles Umlauf discussing his work and gift to the people of the City of Austin, is available with captions for the hearing impaired.

The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum provides free tours and admission to all public school groups. The UMLAUF also offers transportation assistance through bus re-imbursements to Austin Independent School District.

Shaping Space

Shaping Space

After school programming held during the spring and fall semesters, this fun six-week sculpture workshop designed for elementary-middle school students encourages creative thinking and meaningful engagement by exploring clay. Partnering with organizations that serve at-risk youth, our instructors visit sites weekly to teach hand-building, casting, and glazing techniques.  The UMLAUF partners with Campfire and Boys and Girls Clubs of Austin. This program is supported by Texas Commission on the Arts and Education Foundation of America.
